The $40,000 retirement gap: why finishing work just got more expensive – The Senior

[Changes to federal government deeming rates] come as new analysis from conservative think tank the Centre for Independent Studies argues contemporary cost-of-living debates focus too heavily on dollar price increases, failing to take into account how wage increases over time have strengthened consumers’ purchasing power.

“People see a higher dollar price and infer that life has become less affordable, even when their paychecks have risen too,” Marian L Tupy writes.

By comparing CPI to wage growth between 1997 and 2025, economist Mr Tupy compares how many hours of work it takes to afford a single product over time.

The “affordability” of furniture, clothing and food has actually improved, he writes, reflecting the “benefits of productivity growth, global trade, technological innovation and competitive markets”.

However, the cost of health, education and housing has worsened since 1997, rising 34 per cent, 22 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively when compared to wage rises.

Soaring energy costs due to the renewables transition threaten Australia’s industrial base amid pursuit of net zero by 2050 – Sky News

Zoe Hilton, Energy Policy Analyst at the Centre for Independent Studies, said that decimating the economy in the pursuit of renewables would send a bad message to other nations weighing up the dilemma. “Australia represents 1 per cent of global emissions. If we destroy our economy in the name of emissions reduction, no country will want to follow in our footsteps,” she said. “Very few investors are interested in building energy-intensive industries such as manufacturing in a country which is on track to becoming one of the most expensive places to buy power in the world. “Larger, high-emitting countries like China, India, and the United States are the ones that ultimately determine the volume of global emissions.”
