On Liberty EP75 China’s risky path to riches

Salvatore Babones, Rowan CallickNovember 17, 2021On Liberty

The Chinese Communist Party is at the peak of its power, entering its second century. It is the most powerful organisation globally, and its General Secretary Xi Jinping is the most powerful person in the world. These are gloriously red days for Chinese communism. But are they marking dawn or dusk, as this dangerous narrative unfurls?

Rowans argues that as ideology enfolds China, its history, culture, and people, ever more tightly, it becomes harder, or even, impossible to prise Party and nation apart. The more prosperous and better-educated Chinese generation that is emerging — may prove more ready to follow their dreams than to support the Party’s constant exaltations of endless struggle.
